At the beginning of each irrigation season, Waterfind publishes a report that provides a snapshot of the Australian water market for the past irrigation season. The 2014 highlights detailed in the report include:

  • Policy developments
  • Permanent water markets 2013/ 2014
  • Temporary water markets 2013/ 2014
  • High level commodity and water use summary
  • Outlook for the start of the 2014/ 2015 irrigation season

The report also addresses the connection between irrigation and agriculture, proving once more the importance of agriculture as the lifeblood of the Australian nation. Tom Rooney, reflects on the importance of water markets in the production of sustainable food and fibre: “water markets now have a global importance; water is rapidly emerging as the most pressing environmental concern for countries such as the United States of America (USA) and China. I’m sure many more nations will follow Australia’s example as the forerunner of managing national water resources with water markets.”

Other highlights in the report include the correlation between permanent water prices and allocation levels between 2008 – 2014 and the estimated water consumption by agricultural activity.
