A local community based initiative in McLaren Vale is bringing back the ‘old-fashioned’ town hall dance to raise funds for a school in Uganda.
On September 13, Jolly Good Events will host its fifth event since September 2013: A Springtime Ball. The event will take place in the McLaren Vale Institute Hall where there will be a live jazz/swing band, foxtrot dance workshop, free nibbles, professional photo booth, silent auction and plenty of good old-fashioned fun.
Jolly Good Events began when Bonnie Dowie returned from a 6-month university placement in Uganda with the hope to raise funds for the many needs she saw there. Having always had a fascination for the lost tradition of the town hall dance, Bonnie with the help of friends and family decided to revive the tradition whilst raising funds for a school she had close connections with in Uganda.
"The dances have proved popular in the community, the largest event attracting nearly 200 guests, and have raised just over $12,000 for the cause," Ms Dowie said. "The current target is $30,000, which will enable the purchase of a school site in a rural community of Uganda (Ngora District) and benefit orphans and vulnerable children."
Tickets for the upcoming event, ‘A Springtime Ball’ are available online (trybooking.com/FMAF) for $25, or $30 at the door. It is a drug and alcohol free event and is for those 16 years plus.
