The Australian Country Alliance party says new camping fees that came into effect on 1 July will hit hard working families in the eastern suburbs.
Candidate for Ringwood, Brian Dungey, said the member for nearby Warrandyte and his department had forgotten their consistencies.
“The new fees are outrageous. Camping at the Upper Yarra damn used to cost $13.50 per night but will now cost $43.50 a night,” he said.
“The tax Parks Victoria has brought in will hit young families and pensioners looking for an affordable night away particularly hard”.
“The money the new tax is raising will go to upgrading the Arts Centre and National Gallery which is great for people closer to Melbourne, but of no use or interest to the people in the Warrandyte and Ringwood areas”.
Mr Dungey said he would be happy to debate Parks Victoria or the member for Warrandyte over the new taxes in the lead up to the election.
“I’d be interested in hear how this tax can be justified. It’s a tax grab at the expense of those who can least afford it.”
