Africa Rising: A Film Screening, Fundraiser and Information Night

Venue: Mitchell Theatre, Sydney Mechanics School of Arts, Level 1, 280 Pitt Street, Sydney

As part of their commitment to raise awareness about Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), The Sydney Feminists are screening the Australian premiere of Equality Now’s uplifting and powerful short film Africa Rising which celebrates the rise, in Africa, of a grass-roots, community movement to end the centuries-old practice of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).

The evening will also features outstanding speakers who are working to end FGM in Australia:

  • Juliana Nkrumah, the founder of African Women Australia, who is running an education program “Our Voices: Filling the Gaps – FGM Spokesperson’s Project”
  • Vivienne Strong RN/WHN MPHC – Vivienne has managed the NSW Education Program on FGM since 2005
  • Khadija Gbla, Director of No FGM Australia, who tells her story as a survivor of FGM and who will be officially launching a Change.Org petition to ask the Prime Minister to convene a cross-ministerial panel to agree on strategies to ensure that no more Australian girls are subjected to FGM.

Any profits raised on the evening will go to projects with the aim of ending FGM:

  • African Women Australia’s FGM education program Our Voices: Filling the Gaps - FGM Spokesperson's Project” which aims to support women who have survived the practice to allow the voices of the affected communities to be heard.
  • The NSW Education Program on FGM, which includes education for health and allied health services, as well as community education and development strategies.

Catering will be supplied by African Feeling in Newtown, and the evening will end with an African dance performance.

No FGM Australia, Australia’s leading organisation working to abolish FGM in Australia, is proud to support The Sydney Feminists.
