Local Media Association Names Mark Brackenbury Editor of the Year
Judges at the Local Media Association, which represents more than 2,200 local news outlets across the United States and Canada, cited Mr. Brackenbury's leadership during the Register's coverage of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, a hurricane, a blizzard, the Boston Marathon bombing and political elections.
"Mark Brackenbury led his newspaper through an intense year of breaking news that might have brought most staffs to their knees," wrote LMA judges when announcing the honor. "The newspaper's coverage of the Sandy Hook shootings, in particular, show what a small staff is capable of, even when faced with personal tragedies."
"This is the ultimate staff award," said Mr. Brackenbury. "I'm honored to receive it because it is a testament to a lot of hard work by a lot of people under some challenging circumstances. I am proud to help lead a staff that approaches such difficult stories with such compassion and professionalism."
Mr. Brackenbury has served as the Register's Managing Editor for more than 10 years and has been on staff since 1986.
"Where others see reasons to complain or be discouraged over the constant change of the industry, or news events that can overwhelm our resources, Mark Brackenbury comes to the newsroom each day and sees the opportunity to do good journalism. He is a steadying force that supports and brings out the best in everyone around him," said Matt DeRienzo, Digital First Media's Connecticut Group Editor.
"Mark is a textbook example of an editor who's made the shift from a print to a digital focus, largely because he's been open to rethinking his own assumptions about how journalism is produced on a day-to-day basis. The result has been a better New Haven Register, which clearly led to this well-deserved award," said Jim Brady, Digital First Media's Editor-in-Chief.
