Today, Senator Simon Birmingham, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for the Environment, announced $158 million in-principle funding approval for irrigation efficiency improvement projects through Round Four of the Australian Government’s On-Farm Irrigation Efficiency Program. The On-Farm Irrigation Efficiency Program provides grant funds to irrigators wishing to upgrade their irrigation delivery infrastructure and in return, irrigators return at least 50% of water savings as a permanent transfer of rights to the Australian Government.
This marks the fourth round of the program which has delivered substantial benefit to regional communities.
The types of projects which received approval of in-principle funding, include:
- laser levelling of paddocks
- upgrading overhead irrigation
- replacing flood irrigation
- modernising drip irrigation systems
- installing soil moisture monitoring and automation equipment.
The program is one of the most cost effective Australian Government water infrastructure investments and is managed by private and non-government entities which are required to perform at the highest commercial standards. Waterfind is one such entity and is responsible for the administration of over $30 million of Round 4 funds.
Waterfind’s CEO Mr Tom Rooney stated that, “Water recovered through on farm irrigation efficiency projects offers substantial
advantages for regional communities by providing the Australian Government access to environmental water while maintaining
the long-term viability of irrigated farming communities.
"It increases the productive capacity of irrigation farms while using less water, engages local contractors, consultants and other irrigation businesses and underpins the longevity and sustainability of irrigation enterprises and their local communities.”
Round 4 of the On-Farm Irrigation Efficiency Program will support irrigation upgrades in the Southern Murray-Darling Basin.
Waterfind is a pioneer in the water market industry with a strong focus on innovation, quality systems and customers. Since foundation and to this day we continue to develop the world’s only quality endorsed water market systems.
Established in 2003, Waterfind developed a water market that expanded from a local focus on water supply and demand, to an industry which spans across Australia. At present, Waterfind facilitates the buying and selling of both permanent and temporary water across the major irrigation regions in NSW, QLD, SA and VIC.
