Friday, November 9th, 2007 - Australian Women in IT and Science Entity

A Cisco specialist, a security and change control consultant plus a software developer step up to the plate to lead AWISE - Australian Women in IT and Science Entity into 2008 and prepare for the national launch of significant women in technology projects - such as Board Readiness and Go Girl - Go For ITâ.
Unanimously voted in for the key leadership roles at the 9 November AWISE AGM, and taking AWISE forward are:
· Barbara Tobin - President and Chair
· Tina Swaker - Treasurer and
· Sonja Bernhardt - Secretary
All three women have highly credible technology backgrounds combined with passionate involvement in female in IT activities.
Barbara started her career in the Computer Industry as the State Manager of Netcomm in 1984. She was the first women in Queensland appointed to hold a Management Role within the Communications field. In 1989 she accepted a position as State Manager of Q*Soft Australia eventually becoming Sales Director in 1991. Her current position is Regional Manager (Qld & NT) for Lan Systems which is a specialist Distribution Company.
Barbara has been a member of Women In Technology for the past nine years and is currently President of Women In Technology. She also holds multiple other board and executive committee roles - eg: Vice President of The Queensland Youth Orchestra and sits on the Smart State SET Task Force responsible for providing initiatives to Parliament through the Office of Women on activities to encourage more women to enter Science, Engineering and Technology. She is a member of The Rotary Club of Brisbane Planetarium.
Tina has worked in the ICT environment for 17 years, in various ICT roles within the military the Public Service and as a contractor. She has more of an ICT business focus now in the areas of change, configuration, release and security management, as Senior Manager Support and Delivery with KAZ Group Pty Ltd. Tina is the Vice President on the Women in Communications (WIC) Board in the ACT.
Tina is keen to contribute to the progression of AWISE towards its goals and vision and is excited to be able to contribute to this as the new AWISE Treasurer.
Sonja CEO of software development firm ThoughtWare, is the first Australian inducted into Hall of Fame for Women in Technology International (Silicon Valley 2005).
She has held and continues to hold a diverse range of executive board and committee appointments, locally, state, nationally and internationally. These appointments include roles such as providing advice to Federal IT Ministers, judging Australian ICT innovation, and providing suggestions for IT policy within her home state of Queensland, as well as being appointed to the International Taskforce for Women and ICT.
Founder of WIT -Women in Technology in Australia, inaugural chair and co founder of AWISE - Australian Women in IT and Science Entity. Presenter of a weekly technology based radio show, a published author of numerous book chapters, journals and magazine articles including Board IT Skills and Women - the Australian Context (chapter) in "The Encyclopedia of Gender and IT" (2006).
Multi award winner (business and personal). Recognised in Who's Who of Australian Women (2007-2008), Who's Who in Queensland (2007), Who's Who in Science and Engineering (2007).
All 3 thanked and congratulated the outgoing committee members (Madeleine Sanders and Yvonne Parle) for getting AWISE into gear.
