Mobile Media Lab & Classroom NewsVroom Makes Editor & Publisher List
NEW YORK, NY -- (Marketwired) -- The York Daily Record's audience engagement work has been honored by Editor & Publisher which named the York Daily Record/Sunday News to the annual 10 Newspapers That Do It Right list.
Editor & Publisher highlighted the Record's NewsVroom, a mobile media lab and classroom launched in 2012, and the staff's community fitness program No Sweat, York in the announcement.
The NewsVroom and No Sweat, York were previously cited by the Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association and awarded the 2013 Reader Initiative Award.
"The point is not to sell products while we're out there, but to have face time with the community," said Randy Parker, Managing Editor of the York Daily Record. "We want to put an iPad or smartphone in their hands and encourage them to download our app... this is more of an educational project."
The NewsVroom, a converted circulation van equipped with laptops, wifi, smartphones, tables and chairs, has its own blog, has visited high school football games, community fairs, libraries and anywhere else the community gathers. Residents can also request the NewsVroom visit an event.
The Record's No Sweat, York movement launched out of a series entitled Fat Battleground: Obesity in York County. Since the series first appeared in 2011, No Sweat, York has included community-sourced fitness classes where residents utilize the Twitter hashtag #nosweatyork when checking in at the gym or taking part in a class. No Sweat, York has also evolved into No Sweat in the Park -- community-organized yoga and Zumba classes.
"The NewsVroom and No Sweat, York are extensions of what the York Daily Record does every day online and in print. We are responsible for providing a gathering point for the community and for keeping the community informed," said Sara Glines, Publisher of the York Daily Record. "Our readers continue to welcome these projects and understand that we will continue to evolve to meet the needs of our readers, our advertisers and the communities we serve."
