Thursday, February 13th, 2014 - Co-Opera

Co-Opera is Australia’s longest serving and busiest touring opera company.  It has been presenting ‘a good night out’ which is affordable and accessible while providing professional development and employment for artists, for over 20 years.

In 2014 the company will tour its greatly loved and highly acclaimed production of Madama Butterfly to NSW, Victoria and SA.

There is much to be praised in Co-Opera’s production of Madam Butterfly: the singing, the set design and, not least, that they are taking their show to small communities…The audience virtually brought the house down.

The Australian

Sung in the original Italian and with surtitles, this production is a visual and theatrical feast, fusing the joy, beauty and sorrow of Puccini’s masterpiece with the elegance and sophistication of Japanese Kabuki Theatre. The innovative direction uses masks, puppets, exotic costumes and stylised gesture to transport the audience into Butterfly’s world.

The role of Cio Cio San (Butterfly) will be shared by the gifted Puccini specialist Annamaria Beni and rising star Grace Bawden.

Annamaria Beni studied in Australia and after becoming one of the few singers to win Sydney’s McDonald’s aria and Melbourne’s Herald Sun Aria, went on to study in London and Italy. Since returning to Australia from her work abroad she has been a frequent performer appearing on ABC radio and television.

Grace Bawden created great media and industry interest following her appearances as a 15 year old on the television program Australia’s Got Talent.  She will now make her much anticipated operatic debut in this production.

Madama Butterfly is already a proven hit with audiences however this season promises even more, with the special opportunity to experience these gifted sopranos as they are supported by some of Australia’s most talented emerging artists and established opera singers.
