Newly formed Australian Beach Volleyball duo London Olympian Becchara Palmer is partnering with Youth Olympian Zina Stone to kick-start their Rio 2016 Olympic campaign in the 2014 Renault Beach Volleyball Series.
The Series was launched in Adelaide two weeks ago and the girls are set to heat up the sand at Surfers Paradise, Gold Coast, as a round two action continues this weekend.
Following respective shoulder and knee reconstructions Becchara and Zina make their return to the sport after a lengthy stint on the sideline.
“After London I really needed some time to recover and assess my options moving forward, to be honest I wasn’t sure if they were in beach volleyball or not," Becchara said. "Turns out, I’m back in the sand and loving it more than ever. I’m inspired daily playing with Zina, she is the most athletic female beach volleyballer in the world - I’m stoked she is on my side of the net!
“Since we decided to make our return, we made a conscious effort to do things better and consequently we’ve recruited our own support team of the best in the business and not rely on Institute or Academy funding - we’re going against the grain I guess.
“We’ve been training for over 8 months now doing things that others around the world simply aren’t and I’m really looking forward to the Series and putting all of our hard work and training into competitive situations,” she said.
The Series is a stepping-stone for Australia’s best Beach Volleyballers to launch onto the world stage and as such is an extremely important part of the duo’s Rio Olympics preparation.
“There’s a lot on the line for us,” Zina said.
“Each match we play is more than just a game, it’s our next meal, it’s our next tournament.
“We are desperate to turn our Olympic dream into reality and we need Corporate Australia to help us get there” she said.
Both Becchara and Zina are determined to help increase the profile of volleyball in Australia and are committed to being role models to other young athletes across the country.
The Series moves to Western Australia, Victoria and New South Wales before the girls’ jet-off around the world in April on their Olympic qualification bid.
