Entrepreneur and success expert Matthew Michalewicz has set out to expose self-help books such as The Secret which perpetuate the myth that all you need to do is wish for what you want and it will happen.
"These kinds of books exploit our understandable desire for a ‘magic wand’, the fairytale world of three wishes,” Matthew says. “But that’s just what it is, a fairytale for the vast majority of us who won’t win the lottery.”
As an antidote, Matthew has written Life In Half A Second, a fact-based guide to the science of success, based on extensive research and his own experience.
Subtitled “How to achieve success before it's too late”, Life In Half a Second includes not only Matthew’s incredible story, but the results of thousands of studies in psychology, human behaviour, medicine, and sports.
After building and selling three multi-million dollar businesses in the United States by age 28, he moved to Adelaide in 2004, where he now lives in a beachside home with his two boys and wife Luiza.
Despite everyone telling him that his success couldn’t be replicated in Adelaide, he proceeded to build a new company from scratch, reaching $20 million in revenue and 180 employees before selling it to Schneider Electric in 2012.
“You always hear how risky starting a business is and how many businesses fail,” Matthew says. “But if you were able to start businesses multiple times without failing, it means you're following a proven process – you’re doing something that’s giving you an advantage over the odds. Life In Half A Second explains that process, and allows the reader to apply the scientifically proven principles to their careers, business, and personal life. It’s all based on facts not myths.”
Matthew’s business achievements have been recognised by a cover story in Time Magazine, the New York Times, Newsweek, and Forbes. He was named the Pearcey Foundation Entrepreneur of the Year, made the Business Journal “40 under 40” list of accomplished business leaders, and University of North Carolina “Alumnus of the Year”.
Lech Walesa, former President of Poland and Nobel Peace Prize winner, who served on the board of Matthew's last company in the United States, said: "The smallest of human beings can accomplish the greatest of deeds. Life in Half a Second provides interesting ideas on how it's done.”
