"It's Not You, It's Me" Seeing Success Overseas
Los Angeles based Indie Filmmaker Nathan Ives, writer and director of "It's Not You, It's Me" starring Vivica Fox (Kill Bill 2), Joelle Carter (Justified), and Ross McCall (Band of Brothers), was surprised to find that his Australian iTunes sales more than doubled those in the US.
Ives is currently trying to create a new indie film distribution model, doing a "pay what you want" grassroots theatrical tour of the US with his film, attending each screening and doing a Q&A after.
His idea is to build a fan base the old fashioned way, connecting one on one with people, driving VOD sales through word of mouth. Also, as part of the tour, he's speaking at local universities about the writing and production of the film, as well as the new marketing strategy.
Assuming the model works, Ives will continue touring through 2014, heading overseas in August after finishing up in the US. "I'm sort of a gypsy at heart" Ives, says, "it's been a real joy meeting indie film fans around the country, being able to join them for a meal or a beer, and talk about our mutual love of film."
When asked about the Australian sales, Ives responded "I'm honestly not sure why, but I'm very grateful for it, if it continues, the next leg of this tour, Australia, here I come!"
