Weight Loss Specialist and Personal Trainer Swears You Can Lose Weight During The Holidays and Keep It Off.
Worried about packing on the kilos this holiday season? Don't worry because you can have your cake and eat it to!
Weight loss specialist and multi award winning personal trainer Mr. Inta-Fitness (Neil Kelliher) shows you seven simple, proven steps you can use to actually lose fat and stay thin through the holiday season.
Well, it's that time of year that we love but our belly, butt and thighs hate.
The holiday season is upon us and although you may be likely to pack on some kilos during this time of bountiful food, drink and celebration, that doesn't have to be the case. With some simple strategies and a little planning you can have your cake and eat it to, completely guilt free without packing on a single gram of fat.
Below you'll find seven simple tips from personal trainer and weight loss expert Mr. Inta-Fitness that will help you stay thin through the holiday season.
1.) Pre-Fast on Christmas Day
If you know you are having a large lunch or dinner and dessert, cake or chocolate then skip breakfast and fast until the main meal. Just have green tea or water before to fend off hunger pangs or nibble lightly if you must. Breakfast is a bit of a myth, yes it is normally important for a kick-start to the day and firing up your metabolism but on a day when you'll easily consume all your daily calorie needs at one meal, it is really not necessary. You'll cut 300-500 calories just by skipping breakfast and that is 300-500 calories that will not end up on your waistline.
2.) Snack or nibble on food throughout the day.
If you have a tendency to overeat often then graze and snack on a little here and there all day and you will not build up that chance to be extremely hungry.
Instead of eating one large meal, which ends with an unbuttoning of the pants to let your extended stomach go free, try snacking throughout the day. Foods such as fruit, raw nuts, vegetable sticks or even sliced ham/turkey are a great snack which will help you to eat less later in the day, just be sure to keep snacking to small portions.
Not to mention, eating smaller snacks throughout the day keeps your metabolism burning faster.
Doing this for three hours before the "sit-down” dinner means you won't be as hungry and are less likely to overeat.
3.) Skip the fatty dressings and high-calorie condiments, use low fat, low calorie.
If you're cautious about calories but still want to enjoy the main bbq/feast, skip the fatty dressings.
If the ham/turkey is too dry without some type of sauce, use ketchup or a low-fat dressing/gravy. Many times, the dressings and condiments are worse culprits than the foods you put them on.
4.) Eat more vegetables/salad with your meal and eat them first.
Instead of loading up the potatoes, bread and stuffing etc, choose to have more vegetables or salad with your meats.
On a calorie basis, you're better off eating a larger serving of veggies than you are carbs like potatoes, rice, stuffing, or bread. And, did you know, eating them first will pre-fill your stomach and trigger your satiety before you overeat. Simply put, vegetables are fibre and fibre is filling, eat them first and you'll eat less later.
5.) Don't drink too much liquid with your meal.
Ok, sounds counter intuitive I know as we are always saying drink more water and so on. Here is the deal, too much liquid with a big meal will dilute your digestive enzymes and often results in indigestion and bloating. Even more so if it is alcohol so be warned. But, follow this simple trick and you will be fine.
* Drink up until you sit down to eat.
* With your food have only 200 mls of water to wash it down (½ cup).
* Wait 30 mins after eating before having any more drinks and drink these slowly for
the next hour or two as your food is being digested.
6.) Drink a lot of water throughout the day.
Of course I had to include this now. It will help with hunger throughout the day. Water is a great appetite suppressant and if you're constantly sipping all day, you will not find yourself starving. Another great tip here is to make it lemon water with fresh lemon juice squeezed in as this has a detoxifying effect and helps your body flush out toxins.
7.) Go outside and do some activity.
Sitting around the house all day watching T.V., smelling the food cooking will keep you salivating and your stomach growling and make you even hungrier.
Take a pre lunch/dinner walk with the family or the dog. Go to the park, play with the kids, kick the footy etc. If you're really motivated, go for a jog/run or gym session before lunch/dinner, this will enable you to consume more later with very little chance of storing fat.
Being active will not only help burn off more calories than sitting in front of the TV, it will also keep you from being in "eating mode" all day from the kitchen aromas.
Another point to note is that if you take a walk after eating, you will stimulate digestion and get things moving (if you know what I mean) leading to less chance of bloating or indigestion. Plus, you'll just feel better and avoid the food coma that can often strike at this time.
Bonus Tip.) Have a smaller dessert
Don't skip dessert, just moderate it. Have a small piece of cake or less ice cream or less than a block of chocolate!
It is my feeling you should enjoy yourself and eat a little of anything you want. The holidays are not a time to feel deprived. They are meant to be happy, spending time with friends and family and not worrying about food. If you're dedicated to being in shape, one day will not ruin your results so relax, apply these tips and enjoy yourself.
