Saturday, March 13th, 2010 - Henrietta Child
Henrietta Child, Independent Candidate for Cheltenham, South Australia, has attacked the announcement by Jay Weatherill, the member for Cheltenham, to provide subsidies for rainwater tanks.

“In Cheltenham at least, we don’t need rainwater tanks,” she said.

“Nature has already provided a massive rainwater tank at Cheltenham, which would hold more rainwater than thousands of household tanks.

“We’ve got an abandoned racecourse with a great big aquifer underneath it, and enough stormwater capture potential to collect 25-30 gigalitres a year.

“Why focus on small scale solutions that will never solve the problem of providing a reliable, cost effective water supply?

“What is needed is a large open space on the Adelaide plains, preferably close to the Port Road and Torrens Road drains,” she said,.“And that’s what we’ve already got – right here at Cheltenham, and what’s more it’s still not too late to use it.

“Add to that a good dose of up-to-date technology as the City of Salisbury did years ago and we could do more than just water the veggie patch.

“I believe as the local member, Jay Weatherill had a responsibility to fight for the environmental value of Cheltenham Park.

'Now as Minister for the Environment, I challenge him to go beyond a token response to Adelaide’s future water supply needs, and look once again in his own backyard – where he is rarely seen.”

Ms Child said, “I’m standing as an Independent in Cheltenham because this is our last chance to save this wonderful natural resource, for the local residents, the people of Adelaide and the State.”
