DEAF SERVICES QUEENSLAND HELPING FAMILIES CONNECT

For many people, having the opportunity to swim with the dolphins at SeaWorld is a once in a lifetime experience, and Heather Mills is no different.

Wishing to share the special experience with her two children Emily and James, Heather organised a swim with the dolphins experience for her family with the support and assistance of Deaf Services Queensland.

Deaf Services Queensland provided an interpreter for this experience allowing Heather, James and Emily experience something special together.

‘It was great to have the interpreter there as I was able to share that time with my children as opposed to relying on them to inform me as to what was happening.’

‘I could laugh with them, learn with them…rather than having to play catch up and find out information after everyone else.’

‘It was truly wonderful to be able to learn about dolphins and respect them as an animal with the assistance of an interpreter.’

‘I recommend that all deaf people wishing to do this to have an interpreter with them…it ensures a really special experience for the person.’  Ms Mills said.

CEO for Deaf Services Queensland Brett Casey states ‘It is a pleasure to service the unique needs of Heather’s and other community members.’

‘It is examples such as Heather’s that really help us achieve our organisational vision of seeing deaf people empowered, connected and achieving and help drive our team’s passion to provide excellent service every day.’ Mr Casey said.
