Marilyn and Chris are members of Illawarra Archers (Wollongong NSW). We enjoy our FITA field course, but we sometimes also visit other clubs, for traditional and 3D shoots.

We’ve been working for a few months on Norfolk Island and were given a warm welcome by the local archery club. We’ve been incredibly fortunate to have been here for the annual “Open Field Archery Championships”; with about 50 visiting archers from Australia & New Zealand, and about 20 local archers, participating.

Each archer’s best 3 field rounds were counted for the final results, and the prizes in each division were shields the shape of the island, made out of famous Norfolk Island Pine; winners also took home a traditional Island woven hat.

Social get-togethers on arrival, plus an Island fish-fry with registration, plus lunches, and the presentation dinner with Island entertainment, were enjoyed by all. Most only stayed for a week, but still found time to take in some of the many non-archery Island activities. Non-shooting partners had no trouble finding other activities (including tax-free shopping) most mornings, when the shooting was on.

Glenn McMahon, a friend from our home club came and joined us. He wrote: “What can I say about Norfolk, the whole place is breathtaking. The people that I met both from the island and those in the tournament, and on tours, were all friendly and welcoming. The tournament was well organized, the catering and off field activities were all well planned and executed, the field itself was ( as I keep telling anyone who will stand still long enough) is without doubt the finest 3D field I have shot…… All these things combined to make this holiday, tournament, trip the most enjoyable experience one could imagine. You can be sure I'll be back”.

There is much to see and do on Norfolk Island: fascinating historic tours, see Kingston which is a World Heritage Listed area, outdoor re-enactments of the Bounty Mutiny (with parts played by actual descendants of Fletcher Christian), ‘Light and Sound’ shows, eco-tours, glass bottom boat coral reef trips, swimming, snorkeling, fishing, dining out in the numerous fine restaurants, bush walking, scenic horse riding, golf on what has been called the world’s most beautiful golf course, bowls, tennis, and squash.
