Wednesday, September 4th, 2013 - Norfolk Island Travel Centre

First Fleet descendants and history lovers are invited to celebrate the First Fleet anniversary on Norfolk Island next March 2014. Norfolk Island was settled not long after Sydney on March 6th 1788 when Lieutenant Philip Gidley King and 22 settlers, including 7 free men and 15 convicts hoisted British colours and took possession of Norfolk Island.

Many First Fleet descendants have ancestors who lived and received land grants on Norfolk Island before the island was abandoned. Later inhabited by a second convict settlement and more recently the descendants of the Bounty mutineers and their Tahitian wives, this island is awash with history.

In recognition of the significance of Norfolk Island as the first settlement after Sydney and the critical role it played in supporting the fledgling community, - a week of special events will be held on the island.

Visitors have the choice of two different programmes of events to celebrate the First Fleet arrival which are optional and in addition to the holiday package prices below. Event highlights include re-enactment of the First Fleet landing, Welcome dinner with Norfolk Island Historian guest speaker, luncheon at the home of a First Fleet Descendant (exclusive to The Travel Centre), customised “First Settlement Tour” and farewell dinner and entertainment.

Descendants and history lovers will also have the opportunity to utilise the new state of the art KAVHA Public Research Centre to learn more about their heritage and to join a customized First Fleet Settlement tour presented by Norfolk Island Museum.

The Norfolk Island Travel Centre has special packages for travel from Sydney 28 February-7 March 2014 and Brisbane 1-8 March 2014.
