40% of voters in Corangamite and Corio named taxation or the economy as the area in which action by the Federal Government would most benefit them and their families, a Special Multi-Mode Morgan Poll conducted on August 19-21 shows.

An equal proportion of voters in each seat (10%) say reducing taxes or increasing tax benefits will be most useful. Corio’s voters were slightly more likely to call for the repeal of the carbon tax, while Corangamite’s were more likely to name an economic issue including improving or stabilising the economy and reducing cost of living or power costs (26% compared with 22% in Corio).

35% of voters in each electorate cited a Social issue as a priority, with Health and Welfare higher in Corangamite, and Education and social justice issues such as gay marriage higher in Corio.

These two adjacent electoral divisions are currently held by the ALP; Corangamite is the most marginal seat in the country while Corio, covering Geelong, is the party’s safest non-metro seat.

Michele Levine, CEO, Roy Morgan Research, says:

“The results of this latest poll suggest that the voters of Corio and Corangamite share many similar concerns, especially with regards to the economy.

“Our long-term research has shown that concern for economic management has actually been a core point-of-difference between the electorates over the past few years. On the proportion of voters citing Managing the Economy as a top issue of importance, Corangamite is in the top quintile (ranking 29th of 150 electorates) while Corio is in the bottom quintile, at 128th.

“Since October 2010, more voters in Corio have actually cited crime reduction as an important issue than economic management, but with the election drawing near it is clear that the economy is top-of-mind among voters.”

Respondents were asked, ‘Regardless of which party wins the election on September 7, what could the Federal Government do that would MOST benefit you and your family?’
