Labor will continue to support the work of Australia’s regional natural resource management organisations with around $450 million provided under the Regional Delivery component of the Rudd Government’s Caring for our Country initiative.

Federal ministers Mark Butler and Joel Fitzgibbon announced the funding today and said the government acknowledged the important role local resource management organisations play building an environment that is healthier, better protected, well–managed and resilient and also ensuring our farming practices are sustainable.

“The local knowledge of Australia’s natural resource management organisations is critical to the long term success of our national environmental management,” Mr Butler said.

“They are about making sure the local expertise within catchments drives environmental management.

“These projects will support the maintenance of ecosystem services and protection of our conservation estate along with improved management of agriculture, fisheries and other natural resources.

“We are also enhancing the capacity of Indigenous communities to conserve and protect natural resources.”

Mr Fitzgibbon said the Australian Government’s partnership with regional organisations ensures that local communities can influence the allocation of resources within their region.

“Local communities rely on healthy, productive and resilient agricultural landscapes for sustainable food production and the broader sustainability of our rural and regional communities,” he said.

“As part of the program, regional facilitators will help develop a skilled and capable Landcare network within their region to work with famers and land managers and promote sustainable agriculture.

“Australia’s agricultural competitiveness and the health of our rural and regional communities is underpinned by our productive environment which is why we must continue to invest in sustainability into the future.”
