When renovating, we often fall into the trap of thinking that it will be best to do everything ourselves. But as Brianna O'Neil, Owner and Director of Real Estate Property Styling company, styled by hibernate – http://styledbyhibernate.com.au – explains, this is simply not the case.

"Are you in a well paid profession where your time spent working could equate to the cost of hiring a painter and decorator?" says Ms O'Neil

"Sometimes you just have to weigh up the options," she added, "I spoke with Keith Delamore, painter and decorator with over twenty years experience, and he gave me this four tips on how to decide whether to call in a painting pro."

"I'm often asked this question," says Mr Delamore, "and I encourage my clients to ask themselves a series of questions" –

1. Time versus money – Do you wish to spend a week of your holidays arguing with your partner, only to get a non result or a substandard one?

2. Tools will save you – Do you believe that although you not a highly skilled painter, masking tape will save you from crooked lines and paint on carpet windows and cabinets?

3. Expensive equipment – Have you already gone to the hardware store and bought three or four brushes and only receiving change from a fifty dollar note?

4. Breaking the budget – Have you done a budget of all materials and an accurate estimate of time required? If so have you compared that budget to several actual quotes from a tradesman?

"The reality is that unlike home renovation shows such as The Block and House Rules, painting can can be laborious and you will be the one doing the work. However, like on TV, painting a property can lead to disagreements with your "co-workers" on desired outcomes and methods of achieving them."

If you have no desire to purchase 15 rolls of $8 masking tape, you know it's time to call a painting pro.

Pro tip; Paint is money - Always take 3 square metres off the estimated coverage area stated on the paint can. You lose paint every time you wash up or spill.
