A recent study by buyers advocate group Secret Agent has shown that in 2012 buyers saved five per cent on rainy auction days.

Melbourne property styling expert and owner of styled by hibernate -, Brianna O’Neil said it doesn’t necessarily mean doom and gloom for vendors.

"The challenges that come with selling property in the winter months mean that vendors need to find alternate methods to help their property stand out from the pack,” said Ms O'Neil.

"Just because the weather is dreary, doesn’t mean that the house needs to be," she said.

“On a wet day you cannot rely on the luxury of ‘walk ups’ that you may have during the warmer months, so getting buyers at your door, regardless of weather conditions is paramount.”

“And the best way to do that it through a well presented campaign.”

“Going the extra mile to make the home a warm haven from the cold will put you on track to beating the auction odds during the wet months.”

Ms O’Neil recommended using the following strategies when selling during winter

• Winning online photography will drag potential buyers off the couch on cold days to open for inspections.

Colour in decor and artwork can add warmth, especially when using trending colours for cool climates.

• Use texture such as faux fur in rugs and plump, soft cushions to promote homeliness.

• Keep temperature at optimum level during inspections using fireplaces, ducted heating, split systems and courtyard gas heaters.

• Keep it cosy by creating comfy nooks to help the buyer picture their new lifestyle.

“When making the decision to sell, vendors should not be deterred by the cooler months, as well presented property can still bring a hot winter price.”
