Norfolk Island demonstrates a surprising trait by celebrating Thanksgiving Day each year. An American inspired celebration Thanksgiving Day came to this small island in the 1890s as a cultural kind of cargo with the American whalers and traders.
The tradition has stuck and today families celebrate Thanksgiving Day on the fourth Wednesday of November by bringing produce to sell and raise money for the local church. The auction is often tongue in cheek where sour milk bread has a going rate of $40 per loaf.
The islanders also sing American hymns. This year the congregation will have the backing of Schola Cantorum, a choir from Christchurch New Zealand travelling from the South Island to join Norfolk Islanders to celebrate Thanksgiving.
Conductor Roger Buckton Associate Professor of the School of Music, University of Canterbury will be holding choral and sight singing workshops through the week. Roger was the founder and conductor of both the Dunedin Youth Orchestra and North Shore Youth Orchestras and has conducted numerous festival choirs and orchestras. Joining Roger will be Assistant Conductor David O’Beirne. A private voice teacher and freelance choral tutor for primary schools in Canterbury, David is a member of the NBR New Zealand Opera chorus and appears regularly as a soloist throughout New Zealand.
