Australian facial recognition developer See-Out is on the lookout for developers who would like to benefit from its six-year research project in face recognition.

Just released at CeBIT Sydney 2013, the CeeQ Face API is a REST-based cloud service available for free to developers who might want to integrate face detection, face recognition, or demographic information from faces into their applications.

A spin-out from NICTA, Australia’s ICT Research Centre of Excellence, See-Out was recently awarded a Skills & Knowledge Grant from Commercialisation Australia to help commercialise technology that can find and recognize faces in uncontrolled images and combine them with other data.
“Our CeeQ technology was originally designed for CCTV, so it’s based on a fast and robust algorithm, which works even for low resolution, uncontrolled images,” CEO Sandra Mau says.

“That means we can find images even where there are potentially large pose variations, different environments and lighting conditions, which are common challenges in online photos.”

To demonstrate the CeeQ Face API capability, the company has developed CeeQ ME, which uses the CeeQ Face Recognition algorithm to find untagged photos online, currently in Facebook.
Mau says face recognition is a hot area at a time when most people who participate in online networks have so many pictures of themselves in circulation – and many more they may not even know about.

"This is not just about curating your images, it’s also about reputation management,” Mau says. “You can find plenty of stories online about people being fired because of unfortunate Facebook photos.”

CeeQ’s technology has already been acknowledged as a leader in this field, winning various industry awards, including;
• R&D Innovation of the Year at Asia Pacific ICT Alliance 2011
• R&D Merit Award at Australian iAwards 2011
• Tech23 iLab startup award 2012
• The Australian Innovation Challenge Finalist 2012
