Latest figures for tourism show a welcome rise in the number of international visitors, but they mask an underlying problem facing the industry in the State.

The Tourism Research Australia statistics point to a continuing malaise compared with other States.

“Of all the international visitors who arrive in this country, a meagre four per cent came to
South Australia,” Shadow Tourism Minister David Ridgway said.

“That’s the lowest of all mainland States.

“And those who did come spent less than they did in other States,” Mr Ridgway said.

“Total expenditure was under $660 million – again, the lowest of the mainland States.

“There’s no reason SA should sit at the bottom.

“International visitors to SA spent less per visitor and spent less per night for the duration of their stay.

“Tourism at the Cabinet table is represented by Labor’s most junior Minister, a political gadfly who seems more at home enjoying the perks of the job by travelling overseas himself than in rolling up his sleeves here in South Australia.

“SA needs a Tourism Minister with talent and commitment. I promise we will get one after the next State election.”
