Three movie trailers have been launched for the Environmental Defenders Office of Northern Queensland's new sponsorship video. The video is designed to attract domestic and international philanthropic support for free environmental legal advice and follows the Queensland State Government's cancellation of 100% of its funding for community environmental legal assistance, which the Australian Federal Attorney-General has labelled 'disgraceful'.
Today, the Environmental Defenders Office of Northern Queensland announced the release of three tongue-in-cheek ‘movie trailers’, foreshadowing the unveiling of a sponsorship video, aimed at attracting the interest and support of philanthropists – both domestic and international.
Principal Solicitor for the Environmental Defenders Office of Northern Queensland, Fergus Power, said “There is so much beauty in Northern Queensland, and yet so much threat. There is a desperate need for the community to be able to access free environmental legal advice. Our capacity to help the Northern Queensland community has been devastated by the Queensland State Government’s shock decision mid-2012 to eliminate 100% of State funding for the two Environmental Defenders Offices in Queensland.”
“An unrelenting program of alteration to State environmental policies, statutes, and regulations means that the natural environment and cultural heritage of Northern Queensland is increasingly at risk. Areas particularly in need of environmental legal advice include (a) the Great Barrier Reef and its catchments (particularly in relation to the management of pollution, sedimentation, agricultural run-off, port expansion and capital and maintenance dredging, and shipping); (b) Cape York, with proposals to clear massive areas of land for agricultural food production, with an unavoidable implication that there will be a need to extract enormous quantities of water from rivers to feed that expansion, and mining/extractive activities; and (c) throughout all of Northern Queensland, mining/extractive activities, and planning issues associated with an aggressive process of expansion into sensitive areas”, he said.
The movie trailers can be viewed on the Environmental Defenders Office of Northern Queensland’s Facebook page:
Mr Power is hopeful that those viewing the three trailers will be motivated to become members of the Environmental Defenders Office of Northern Queensland, and help support the provision of free environmental legal services for the Northern Queensland community.
