Thursday, February 21st, 2013 - Australian Christians

Saturday 23 February 2013 will officially launch the Australian Christians federal election campaign at their Victorian state conference. The conference theme is faith, family and freedom. Speaking to Radio National following the Melbourne lecture by Dutch Politician Geert Wilders this week, Victorian Senate candidate Vickie Janson said, 'without freedom of speech, all other freedoms are indefensible'. Australian Christians maintain they are entering the political conversation to 'level the playing field' that is currently sidelining players in a way that undermines freedom and democracy.

Australian Christians maintain they are entering the political conversation to 'level the playing field' that is currently sidelining players in a way that undermines real freedom and democracy.

While Saudi Sheik Abdul Rahman Al-Sudais - who has accused Jews as 'accursed by Allah' and (are) 'apes and pigs' - is invited to speak at the Australian Islamic Peace Conference in Melbourne next month with little controversy or public outrage, there is a double standard applied to comments made by Mr Wilders.

Prime Minister Juila Gillard has called Mr Wilders views 'abhorrent', the Attorney General Mark Dreyfus labelled Wilders a 'right-wing extremist' and politicians generally have steered clear of any dialogue with this visiting MP to hear the full conversation. Yet strangely, both our Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Bob Carr have met with Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood President Morsi to hear his views despite him being on record as repeating the sentiments of the Saudi Sheik: ie referring to Jews as 'warmongers and descendants of apes and pigs'.

In light of this, why would our Prime Minister consider Mr Wilders' comments to be abhorrent, while remaining silent about the visiting Saudi Sheik and President Morsi?

Australian Christians believe all should have a fair go and this is the time to open the conversation to all voices so the general public can make up their own mind what shape the social issues pertaining to faith, family and freedom will take in Australia.
