Today the Geraldton Turf Club will celebrate 150 years of racing, and on the behalf of the Mid West race clubs, Geraldton Turf Club President Jeff Clarke will launch a new report measuring the economic and social impact of racing in the region.
More than 1000 people are expected to partake in celebrations of the historic milestone at the track while also celebrating the success of racing with the announcement of new economic data highlighting just how important racing is across the Mid West.
The Mid West Economic Snapshot follows a State wide report that was released by Racing and Wagering WA (RWWA) in September, and provides an in-depth analysis of the economic value, employment opportunities and many community groups & local charities that benefit from racing across the Mid West.
Mr Clarke said the release of the data highlighting the significant contribution of the Mid West racing industry on the local and State economies has been a great addition to the celebrations of the 150 year milestone.
“From the Geraldton Turf Club’s humble beginnings in 1861 the club has grown into one of WA’s most progressive race clubs, holding 19 race meetings per year and the club provides a training ground to many of the State’ best jockeys who began their careers in the Mid West.
“The findings of the report state that the six race clubs across the Mid West employ the equivalent of 172 people full time and there are more than 1,100 participants involved in producing and preparing race horses across the Mid West region.
“This means that one in every 41 people in the Mid West is involved in the racing industry as an employee, volunteer or participant, not to mention nearly 20,000 racegoers who turn out across the region each year to enjoy race meets just like this one,” he said.
In recent years there has been a $2 million transformation to the facilities of the Utakarra course; from very aged and tired facilities the club now boasts a facility that provides enjoyment for not only racegoers but many within the community of Geraldton.
