As the marriage equality debate rages around the world, it’s become clear that there is a voice missing from the discussion: the voice of the kids.

Young filmmaking duo, Charlotte McLellan (Producer) and Maya Newell (Director) are revealing the untold stories of children of same sex parents with their documentary, GAYBY BABY.

To complete the film, they need $100,000, so they are seeking community support with a 5 week crowdfunding campaign on pozible.com.

Director Maya Newell, grew up with two mothers, giving her a unique insight into the subject. “When I was a kid, I didn’t know many other children with gay parents. I would have loved to have been able to watch a film and feel that my experiences were shared. So I’ve decided to make that film.”

McLellan says, “It’s exciting to be moving from an age of Independent Films to ‘Fandependent’ Films, where audiences are empowered to back the films they want see and filmmakers are given freedom from traditional funding structures.”

Crowdfunding websites like Kickstarter, Indigogo and Pozible are a testament to the web’s viral nature. On Kickstarter alone, last year saw 30 million visitors to the site pledge $99.3 million in support of projects they believe in.

Worldwide, we’re in the midst of a “Gayby-Boom”. While most kids are grappling with the idea of ‘Man + Woman = Baby’, gaybies are fluent in IVF technologies. They are well versed on how to hide or proudly share their families. They see a very different side to sexual discrimination and it is largely unrecognised that gaybies have to “come out” too.

“I don’t know many other kids with two mums or dads and when I tell the other kids at school they think a ‘Donor’ is a ‘Donut’,” says 12 year old Lara, who features in the film.

While much of mainstream media focuses on the challenges faced by children with same sex parents, GAYBY BABY also explores some of the joys in being different. “Sydney Mardi Gras is as good as Christmas,” says 10 year old, Gus. “They are the best two days of the year.”

The GAYBY BABY team raised $13,619 via crowdfunding earlier in the year, which allowed them to film a gayby compete in the NT Swimming Championships and film a number of kids as they marched in the Sydney Mardi Gras Parade. In the absence of government funding or financial sponsorship, they are now aiming to raise the rest of the film’s budget.

The money raised from crowdfunding will go towards production costs including sourcing further content for the film, camera equipment, travel and accommodation, marketing, and postproduction costs including a professional editor, grading, sound design, sound mixing and animation design.
