After much anticipation the Northern Territory Major Projects Conference is set to take place on 30 and 31 October, with delegates converging on Darwin from all over the country. The event has continued to grow, and now in its 3rd year 450 people are expected to turn out at the Darwin Convention Centre in the hope of securing new business connections and contracts.

The conference has attracted the attention of firms Australia-wide interested in the potential business opportunities in the Northern Territory, a state that has expanded dramatically in the past decade. Since 2001 infrastructure spending in the Territory has grown by 252 per cent, and $10 billion has been injected into developing the region. Mining projects have allowed long term, capital intensive business to thrive, and with a number major infrastructure projects planned, the private sector is looking for openings to leverage off these developments.

The conference will see CEO’s, GM’s, company directors, top-level executives and also VIP’s from the new Northern Territory Government share their insights into the region’s forthcoming developments, and offer exclusive information on current and planned major infrastructure projects. Supported by the Northern Territory Government, the event will touch on some of the infrastructure, road and transport strategies, and also discuss the region’s growing workforce. Kim Jenkinson, Executive Director of Employment and Training at the Department of Business will be showcasing the programs in place to assist businesses in meeting their workforce needs.

Of particular interest to delegates will be presentations from Sean Kildare, General Manager of INPEX and Neil Cass, JKC Australian Industry Participation Local Content Manager, who will be speaking on Ichthys LNG Project, the $34 billion offshore oil and gas plant currently in development. Formally opened in May this year, the Ichthys Project will haul gas from a field in the Browse Basin off the coast of Western Australia via a subsea pipeline to an onshore liquefaction plant based in Darwin. Production is expected to start by late 2016, and attract an influx of workers and business to the region.

Other topics that have attracted interest to the conference include the Wonarah Phosphate Project, Australia’s largest undeveloped rock phosphate venture that Neville Bergin, GM Projects Development at Minemakers, will be speaking on, and other developments including the Darwin Marine Supply Base, the NABL Meat Processing Facility and the new Darwin Prison.

Figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows the State Final Demand for the Northern Territory rose over 7 per cent in the March 2012 quarter, with growth being driven by an increase of nearly 30 per cent in private sector investments. With Darwin’s privileged position as the shortest transport route for two way trade between Asia and Australia and the region boasting an abundance of mineral resources, the economic stability in the Territory is secure and is set to grow. Platinum Sponsor DB Schenker are among the firms taking advantage of these opportunities in the Territory, and will be keen to network with the delegates at the event, one of the largest of its kind in the state.

Other sponsors exhibiting include AECOM, QA Software, ProjectLink, Blackwoods, Leighton, MSS, Sitzler and Vibropile.
