Saturday, October 20th, 2012 - Racing and Wagering Western Australia
Perth's 2012 Spring Racing Carnival kicked off today in spectacular fashion with experts predicting 205,000 people will flock to Ascot alone over this summer's racing season.

Racing and Wagering Western Australia (RWWA) CEO Richard Burt said Ascot is one of Western Australia’s 55 race clubs across the state where last year nearly 870,000 people enjoyed the glamour and thrill of racing, making the sport WA's third highest attended after AFL and motor sport.

"The racing industry as a whole continues to grow in Western Australia with WA Racing's Economic Report showing it is worth more than half a billion dollars annually - excluding wagering - to the local economy."

Following on from a State wide economic report launched last month, today Mr Burt launched a snapshot of the impact Perth's metropolitan area has on the WA racing industry - with compelling statistics to tell.

"Perth's racing sector is responsible for maintaining full-time equivalent employment for 4,182 people across the thoroughbred, harness and greyhound racing codes."

The Festival of Perth Racing runs from today until Perth Cup Day on 1 January 2013 and is regarded as Perth's favourite celebration of fashion, music and first-class racing.

The Crown Perth Open Day features a bumper nine event program including the $80,000 Listed Northerly Stakes and $80,000 Listed Crown Perth-Belgravia Stakes and the anticipated final of the Myer Fashions on the Field.
