St John NZ joint initiative with Canterbury District Health Board and Lightfoot Solutions scores Star Award for outstanding achievement
St John New Zealand, the major ambulance service provider for New Zealand, has been recognised by an international judging panel for the most outstanding achievement in ambulance services at a recent Council of Ambulance Authorities (CAA) awards ceremony.
The Star Award recognises how the St John collaboration initiative within the healthcare system in New Zealand is delivering better care to more patients. The winning initiative brings together St John NZ and Canterbury District Health Board (CDHB), as the primary and secondary healthcare providers, using fact-based insights delivered by Lightfoot Solutions to plan and implement more appropriate patient pathways.
‘Bravo to this most deserving project,’ said Gary Wingrove, Chairman of the International Roundtable on Community Paramedicine, Director - Government Relations & Strategic Affairs at Gold Cross/Mayo Clinic Medical Transport and one of the internationally recognised primary care experts judging the awards.
‘Let's hope it spreads to the rest of the world. It's our dream in North America. This project is so awesome, and will impact our patients in ways we cannot yet comprehend. If they continue to make it a priority, eight years from now we will call it the best paramedic service innovation of the first 20 years of this century,’ stated Mr Wingrove.
In addition to winning the pinnacle Star Award, St John NZ won the Technical Capability Award and Operational Performance Award in the Australasian Ambulance Awards for Excellence.
‘With an engaged workforce, evidence based decision-making, a collaborative mindset and commitment to the wider healthcare system we are part of the delivery of better healthcare to patients – in the most efficient and cost-effective way,’ said Andrew Slater, St John NZ Planning and Development Manager, accepting the award on behalf of St John.
In presenting the award Greg Mundy, CAA CEO said, ‘this initiative truly is unlike anything we have seen before. It has the potential to save countless lives all around the world and I look forward to seeing it progress over the coming years.’
St John NZ Operations Director, Michael Brooke, accepting the Operational Performance Award for Excellence said, ‘we’re building an ambulance service for the future based on facts, frontline staff insights and a role in the healthcare system beyond just transport. We have already saved costs, improved productivity, boosted performance, bolstered morale and helped more patients receive appropriate healthcare.’
