Almost one third (29%) of Australian businesses expect the National Broadband Network (NBN) to benefit or be useful to their business, as do nearly half of all Large Businesses (42%).  These are the latest findings from the Roy Morgan Business Survey for the 12 months to June 2012.

The larger the business (in terms of number of employees), the more likely they are to expect a benefit from the NBN.  For example, 42% of Large Businesses (with 200 or more employees) expect a benefit from the NBN, compared to only 28% of Micro Businesses (under 5 employees).

In terms of business location, those that are headquartered in Capital Cities are more likely to expect a benefit from the NBN than those located in the rest of the State or Territory.

Andrew Braun, Mobile, Internet & Technology Industry Director, Roy Morgan Research, says:

“Although almost a third of businesses see a benefit from the NBN, the Government and Industry still have a great challenge in educating and persuading more than two thirds of Australian businesses on how the NBN will benefit their business, as most see little more than the main benefit of the NBN as simply ‘faster Internet speed’ (according to an earlier survey by Roy Morgan Research in September last year).

“Obviously ‘faster Internet speed’ is not a benefit to businesses in its own right, so the business community, particularly small businesses, will need to be convinced as to how faster speeds can equate to real benefits to their business.  These may include teleworking, staff training and access to international markets but, to date, the message isn’t getting through.”
