More than 40 percent of NSW families are not prepared for a fire breaking out in their house, according to GIO Insurance and Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW).

GIO’s latest research found:
• 44 percent of NSW families do not have a fire escape plan
• 40 percent of parents are not confident their children know what to do in a fire
• More than one in five NSW families are not even talking about fire safety.

On the back of these findings, FRNSW and community partner GIO are urging families to sit down together and plan for a possible fire breaking out.

FRNSW Superintendent Ed Salinas, Manager Community Engagement and Development, said that it was vital that families took the time to plan how they would escape in the event of fire.

“Firefighters regularly visit schools and educate children about fire safety through our FireEd program, but these messages need to be reinforced in the home.

“A fire can take hold in just three minutes. A working smoke alarm will give you the early warning you need to escape, but everyone in the house must know how to escape safely.

“So take the time to talk to your children about where the exits are, and identify a safe meeting point. And remember, if a fire starts in your home, get out, stay out and call Triple Zero.â€

GIO spokesperson Duncan Bone said families without a fire plan need to overcome the feeling it will never happen to them.

“Unlike storms, floods or cyclones, no one expects a house fire but the risk is just as real,†he said.

“One in five people in NSW have already experienced a house fire and every year thousands more families are affected,†he said.

GIO and FRNSW also have a simple online test to help families understand their fire risks and provide prevention tips

It is a simple online assessment tool, built by GIO and FRNSW, which gives the household a fire safety rating and tips about how to prevent or prepare for fires.

Collected data has been weighted in line with current ABS population demographics to ensure any extrapolation of results is representative of age sex and area.
