Tuesday, September 25th, 2012 - PRIDE HARD - Robert Lloyd and Kelsey Gade

PRIDE HARD is a cross-generational comedy, catering for most age goups, premiering at the 2012 Melbourne Fringe Festival on September 28th. It was inspired by the classic action film, 'DIE HARD' but is told in the style of the epitome of genteel, classic literature, 'PRIDE AND PREJUDICE'.

Pride Hard is being presented by previous sell-out, 12th year Melbourne Fringe performer Robert Lloyd, age 34, and new fringe performer Kelsey Gade, age 22. A conglomeration of the young and the old, the masculine and the feminine.

Rob Lloyd partners with Kelsey Gade for this fringe season, a young actor with “talent beyond her years”. Kelsey was once described by Chris Lilley, when Kelsey acted with him at age 14, as “a young Magda Szubanksi” and compared to the legendary, comedy pioneer Mary Hardy, due to her caustic, comedic wit and her fearlessness to experiment with comedy.

The teaming of Lloyd & Gade is a comedy match that is rare. Nerdiness meets trendy youth with hilarious interactions and consequences!

“Kelsey has great presence and spirit on stage – and great comic flair. She shone amongst her peers.” ~ John Jacobs and Simon Fisher, Deakin University.

Rob Lloyd’s previous shows had a level of energy, excitement and audience engagement that Pride Hard will also have.

“... an excellent piece from a now-seasoned Melbourne Fringe Festival performer ... sending the crowd into peals of laughter ... and well worth the entry fee.” 4 Stars.
~ Theatre People.

Pride Hard is a high energy, physical comedy show presented by two exciting, highly skilled and edgy performers. However, Pride Hard won’t be an ‘act-out’ show, it will  be exploring what makes a good story.  No sense or sensibilities.

This challenging show, directed by Scott Gooding of Vicious Fish Theatre, will take many of the techniques Rob has used in previous Festival shows and completely flip them around whilst adding Kelsey’s comedic writing style to the formula.

Pride Hard will not be the usual genre mash-ups that present classic pieces of literature in the style of a modern, pop-culture friendly genre, such as sci-fi. It will be an exploration of the genres, running themes and slices through the storyline recreating a new genre combining polar opposites.

ROBERT LLOYD: Rob, individually, had a sell-out Melbourne Fringe season of his first solo show 'A Study in Scarlet (A Study of…)', which he followed up with 'WHO, ME' which had sell-out seasons at Melbourne Fringe, Adelaide Fringe and Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Both shows were directed and co-devised by Scott Gooding and produced by Vicious Fish Theatre. Rob has obtained rave reviews in past Fringe shows.

“…this is an astonishing and beautiful piece ... which is testament to the intelligence and judgment of its creators. This show is clever and complex. It is a stellar piece of work…’

KELSEY GADE: Kelsey’s first professional job was working with Chris Lilley, in a featured role. She was offered a scholarship at Haileybury College, based on her acting skills, then went on to obtain a double degree from Deakin University, majoring in drama, when she met Rob as her final year supervising teacher.

“One of the most intense young performers I have worked with. She can capture characters well beyond her years with total belief. She also does a fine line in sarcasm!”
~ Stuart Bell, Director of Performing and Visual Arts at Haileybury College.

Two iconic, polar opposite genres, meld into ONE thought provoking, cheeky performance by two extraordinary comedic talents with a rare stage chemistry.
