Minister for Employment Participation today expressed her shock and disgust at comments by South Australian Liberal Leader Isobel Redman’s plans to slash up to 25,000 Government funded jobs in the State.

“The South Australian Opposition Leader is taking a page from Queensland Premier Campbell Newman’s book and wants to swing the axe on South Australian jobs if elected in 2014,” Ms Ellis said.

“Her extreme plan would slash almost a third of the South Australian public service.

“I have seen first hand the effect that Campbell Newman’s 14 000 job cuts have had on Queensland families. It has meant sacking nurses, disaster relief workers, child protection workers, domestic violence counsellors and far more.

“The Liberals are ripping the heart out of community services and support in Queensland yet the South Australian Liberals want to go even further and cut deeper.

“Cuts this deep and this savage would destroy the services that South Australians rely on.

“It would mean hospital wards would close, over-crowded classrooms and unattended police and fire stations.”

In contrast the Gillard Government has focussed squarely on jobs and employment, seeing over 800 000 jobs created since coming to Government and delivering a unemployment rate that is the envy of much of the world at 5.1%.

Minister Ellis is working hard to increase workforce participation in South Australia and spread the benefits of employment and is hosting two Jobs and Skills Expos in South Australia next month. These Expos have now successfully placed over 21000 Australians into jobs.

“Australian’s are getting a very clear preview of what life is like under a Liberal Government by looking to the devastation occurring in Queensland and the slashing of schools funding in NSW’

“These cuts are a curtain raiser to Tony Abbott’s Australia or now Isobel Redmond’s South Australia.”
