Special FX artist Dan Thompson of Rising Sun Pictures is helping MAPS film students create an ambitious major project. Dan has worked on blockbusters like ‘Hunger Games’ and the latest Harry Potter movie.
MAPS Film School students at Hamilton College are working feverishly on their last major project for the year, “Spaceships and Aliens”.
Writer-Director Josh Stevenson and Producer-AD Sophie Morgan are steering a short project with epic production values.
On board his spaceship, a young astronaut adventurer comes under fire from space pirates and crash-lands the crippled ship on a hostile planet, winding up in an intergalactic bar, where all hell breaks loose.
The three-dimensional set for the space vessel in the project would make George Lucas proud. It’s a miracle of polyurethane and plywood. These are full-scale sets, not models, of spaceships.
Assisting the students with expertise in green screen special FX is animator Dan Thompson from Rising Sun Pictures, who has worked on ‘Hunger Games’ and the most recent Harry Potter film. As a MAPS Film School graduate, Dan knows what is required and how much the students learn from the project.
And with three days of intensive shooting available for the student project, the crew will strive to do it justice.
“We are hoping that it will be believable enough… and it was fun putting it all together putting into practice everything we have learned this year,” Josh, the modest aspiring film-maker said.
MAPS Film School Co-ordinator Peter Thurmer is proud of the quality of the students' work and especially the ingenuity and energy the students have put into the project.
“The practical experience the students gain from a significant project like this is one of the reasons our graduates are so widely respected and sought after by the industry,” he said.
MAPS Film School is now looking for students for 2013 for both the Diploma and Graduate Diploma courses it offers. An Open Night for potential students will be held at MAPS, Hamilton College, 815 Marion Rd, Mitchell Pk, on Wednesday, September 12, 6.30 PM.
