A record number of families are taking up child care as a result of the Australian Government's measures to make childcare fees more affordable.

Minister for Early Childhood and Child Care Kate Ellis said the latest Child Care Update data shows there was an 8 per cent increase in the number of families using long day care.

“These new figures show that our record $19.9 billion investment in direct child care assistance for families is working, and more children in WA have been accessing vital early learning opportunities for the first time.

"We hope to see these figures continue to grow as we continue to build a quality, more affordable, accessible child care system for Western Australian families."

Minister Ellis joined Special Minister of State and Member for Brand Gary Gray to tour Goodstart Early Learning Centre in Baldivis to hear from local child care staff and parents.

"It’s fantastic news that more children in WA are accessing child care as the research shows that an early childhood education, now required in all services, will give them the best possible start in life," Minister Gray said.

"The child care providers here at Goodstart here at Baldivis do a fantastic job at providing quality early childhood education and care and I’d like to see more children access the same education and development opportunities the children are enjoying here."
