Tuesday, September 4th, 2012 - Better Schools
Every school in South Australia – Government, Independent and Catholic will benefit under a new National Plan released by the Gillard Government today Member for Adelaide, Kate Ellis said.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard released the plan in response to the first comprehensive review of schools education undertaken in 40 years.

“These new reforms show just how serious our Government is in making education better for every kid, in every classroom,” Ms Ellis said

“Under our National Plan for School Improvement, funding for every school will continue to rise.

“Unlike Christopher Pyne who recently stated that the current level of funding for our Independent and Government schools is appropriate, our Government is actually focused on the future and providing better education to all South Australian kids.

We want to:

· Deliver a new funding system for all schools. There will be a benchmark amount for every student, based on the cost of delivering education at high-performing schools. Extra funding will be available through loadings for students facing educational disadvantage

· Provide more professional support and ongoing career development for the teaching profession, from pre-service teachers to principals.

· Identify schools that need more help to improve their performance, and provide extra support.

· Include a greater focus on the funding and resources provided for disadvantaged students.

· Provide more information about schools to parents and the wider community.

For the first time, funding for every school in Australia would be calculated based on the needs of every student, in every classroom.

“I want to see all Adelaide students have the chance to reach their full potential,” Ms Ellis said.

“Our local schools and teachers are doing a fantastic job and with the additional funding announced today more resources will be available for all teachers.
