A new Federal Government trial will broaden access to emergency accommodation and rent assistance for more homeless job seekers, Minister for Employment Participation Kate Ellis announced today.

From early September, Job Services Australia (JSA) providers will be able to use the Employment Pathway Fund to pay for crisis accommodation and rent assistance for all ‘primary homeless’ job seekers.

“The important role employment services play in helping job seekers who are homeless stabilise their lives and get back into the workforce cannot be understated,” Ms Elllis said.

“Homeless job seekers are some of our most vulnerable and we want to do everything we can to help them get back on their feet.

“That’s why I’m pleased to announce this 12 month trial, which will mean JSA providers can use the Fund to pay for crisis accommodation and rent assistance for all ‘primary’ homeless job seekers – that is, those who are living in a squat, sleeping in a car or tent, or have nowhere to stay.

“The trial builds on the success of the Australian Government’s Wage Connect program, which has so far resulted in more than 1100 job seekers who have identified as homeless being placed in a job.”

Ms Ellis will met with members of the Prime Minister’s Council on Homelessness last week.

“Members of the Council and JSA providers have told us that being able to use the Employment Pathway Fund to offer assistance to those in genuine need of emergency accommodation, regardless of their Stream, would help strengthen a provider’s ability to secure long-term employment outcomes – so, we have listened and acted accordingly,” Ms Ellis said.
