The Australian Democrats have begun working on new policy for Tasmania, launching an omnibus policy survey to help determine policy priorities and community feeling on core issues.

Tasmanian Campaign Director James Irvine says the policy survey is a high-level survey to kick start the process. “We would love as many people as possible to complete the survey by following the link on our website tas.democrats.org.au.”

“Our policy process in Tasmania is modeled on the national policy process. Groups of ordinary members will develop policy based on input from members, the general public through surveys such as this as well as submissions from various community groups, and the policy is then put to a ballot of all Tasmanian members of the Australian Democrats to become official party policy,” Mr Irvine said.

“The Australian Democrats is the only party to allow ordinary members this much involvement in the policy making process.”

The Tasmanian Omnibus Survey asks a number of high-level questions on key areas such as health, education, business, as well as seeking opinions on the Tasmanian Government and living in Tasmania.

“There will be future surveys that delve in to greater depth on these and other issues,” Mr Irvine said. “There are also plenty of opportunities for people to tell us about other issues that they would like us to address.”

Work began on rebuilding the Tasmanian division of the Australian Democrats in September of this year as part of the nation-wide push to rebuild the party.

“The rebuild is so far going very well here in Tasmania. Membership growth is strong, and many of the hundreds of former Australian Democrats members in Tasmania are returning to the party.”

The Australian Democrats are also holding another two new member and information nights next week:

•	New Sydney Hotel (upstairs) in Hobart
November 24, 2009 at 7.30pm
•	Metz Café Bar, Cnr St John and York Streets Launceston
November 25, 2009 at 7.30pm

Anyone interested or curious about the party is welcome to attend.
