JUST Improvise has a new home for its monthly Theatresports improvisation competition – the art deco Mount Lawley Bowling Club.

The specialist improvisation company holds the WA licence for Theatresports from Canada’s International Theatresports Institute, on behalf of its creator Keith Johnstone.

On the first Sunday of every month, improv rookies and veterans battle it out for the coveted WA Theatresports Championship Cup as they act out scenes and scenarios on the spot, inspired by audience suggestions.

Under the creative direction of Glenn Hall, Just Improvise has been producing live scripted and unscripted theatre to popular and critical acclaim since 2000, including Theatresports.

Regarded as one of Australia’s leading improvisers, he has been performing for the past 25 years and has appeared in the hit shows Spontaneous Broadway and Impro Melbourne’s Celebrity Theatresports at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and is a national and state Theatresports champion.

Hall is also the men's captain of the Mount Lawley Bowling Club.

"I first started playing Theatresports in 1988,” he said. “The spirit created in rehearsal and on stage in performance brings players together as a family.

“It’s just like the families who come to watch the shows bond together as they share the joy of being a part of the creative process with the players.

“The family on stage and the families in the audience form a community – deep down everyone desires to be a part of something larger than themselves.

“That's why Theatresports has been around for almost 30 years and will be around for many, many more and why I'm proud to be producing and performing Theatresports today.”

On August 5, improve performers taking the stage include Neil Barnard, Chantelle Magnus, Braye Dial, Ann-Marie Biagioni, Hannah Rice, Manfred Yon, Chris Bedding, Bri Williams, Melanie Bennett, Tegan Mulvany, Paul Calligan and Chris Ratcliffe.

With Hall as MC, they are joined by the toe-tapping live improvising house band, The Cross-Eyed Cats.

"The sense of community created has a synergy with the community created at a sporting club,” Hall said.

“Theatresports is about teams competing against each other by playing games and scenes but who wins is never as important as the success of the show itself.

“It makes perfect sense a theatre is created within a sporting facility where the enjoyment of participation and the sport itself far outweighs the result of winning or losing.

“The Mount Lawley Bowling Club with its 100-year history, charming art deco building and welcoming and inclusive environment is the perfect fit for families and lovers of improvised theatre to come together for a unique experience.”

Just Improvise’s Theatresports is on at the Mount Lawley Bowling Club from 5pm, August 5, September 2 and October 7. Tickets are $20 adult, $15 concession and $60 family – book through BOCS on (08) 9484 1133 or www.bocsticketing.com.au.

A pre-show bowl and sausage sizzle starts at 4pm. Pre-booking is strongly advised because Just Improvise shows often sell out.

The Mount Lawley Bowling Club is on the corner of Storthes and Rookwood Streets, Mount Lawley.
