Identity thieves are taking every opportunity to steal the identity of vulnerable jobseekers as the labour market tightens according to Brenden Brien, National Public Affairs Manager, Sarina Russo Group of Companies.

Mr Brien said the ease, convenience and cost effective nature of online job searching makes the internet a haven for unscrupulous scam artists who are intent on stealing personal information.

“Known as phishing, these scam artists prey on people’s desperation to get back to work by sending an email from an interested recruiter, asking you to subscribe to a career advice blog, offering you a resume services or the opportunity to earn quick, easy money.”

“Identity fraudsters have a simple system. They send out masses of e-mails using a legitimate company’s name in the hope of convincing a few that their e-mails are authentic.

“With jobseekers sending out so many electronic resumes to employers and recruitment companies one of the scammer’s favourite lines is “We saw your resume and you may be perfect for one of our clients. Please click on the link to complete an online application form”.

“Looks can be deceiving as the fraudster’s page can look professional but is carefully designed to defraud you by extracting your personal information,” Mr Brien said.

Conduct a safe online search
1. Never click on an email link from an unsolicited email
2. Don’t give out your personal information freely
3. Ask yourself if you sent your resume to this recruiter?
4. Don’t be lured by the opportunity to earn quick, easy money
5. Check the sender’s name, email address and URL. Clues which indicate a fraud include the:
-senders name not matching the email address,
- email address not containing the company’s name,
- email address ending in a different country code, and
- URL starting with “http:” instead of the encrypted “https:” URL.
6. When in doubt - Delete

Mr Brien said employing safe online job practices will ensure you never get hooked by the phishing practice of identity thieves.
