Debate topic: Australian Cities Need Australian Farmers

In the Australian Year of the Farmer, the latest in the University of Adelaide's [email protected] Waite series moves to the city...

Australian farmers produce approximately 93% of the country’s domestic food supply, but surveys show that a large proportion of city people don't know where their food comes from. Australia is already one of the most urbanised countries in the world, with less than 20% of our 23-million-strong population living in regional areas, and the urban-rural divide seems to be growing.

Does modern Australia no longer consider farmers important? Can we make urban-based Australians understand the importance of agriculture?

Should we focus on our industrial strengths and use the wealth generated to source our food from other countries?

Can Australian cities survive without Australian farmers and sustain themselves with imported and urban community-grown food?

Team for the Affirmative: Professor Wayne Meyer (Chair of Natural Resource Science, University of Adelaide); Ms Deb Bain (CEO of FarmDay, Director of Australian Year of the Farmer, Farmer); Dr Doug Bardsley (Senior Lecturer, Geography, Environment and Population, University of Adelaide).

Team for the Negative: Professor Christopher Findlay (Executive Dean, Faculty of the Professions, University of Adelaide); Councillor David Plumridge AM (Deputy Lord Mayor, City of Adelaide); Associate Professor Wendy Umberger (School of Agriculture Food and Wine, University of Adelaide).

The debate will be moderated by Dr Paul Willis, Director, Royal Institution of Australia.
