Sydney, 4 November 2009 – Samsung Mobile has cemented its support of the Australian film industry, announcing its sponsorship of the prestigious Australian Film Institute (AFI) Awards. The AFI Awards is Australia’s longest running screen industry awards ceremony designed to celebrate the best in local Australian talent within film.

A key supporter of the awards since 2006, and a supporter of the arts in Australia, the three year sponsorship deal underpins Samsung Mobile’s increasing association with the film industry as it moves toward a greater entertainment focus to engage consumers with its innovative mobile phones. Emerging technologies such as those incorporated in Samsung’s new HDICON touchphone including High-Definition video recording, ultra bright and responsive touch screens and dual stereo speaker, are providing Australians with a more interactive cinematic experience on their handsets.

“Samsung Mobile has long been a passionate supporter of the local arts industry through our support of the AFI Awards as a key sponsor and technology partner last year as well as our three year partnership with the Sydney Festival. We recognise that film and television resonate deeply with Australian audiences and feel privileged to help Australia celebrate its most outstanding home-grown film and television achievements,” said Tyler McGee, Vice President, Telecommunications, Samsung Electronics Australia.

McGee continued: “Increasingly, we are seeing consumers enjoy watching and recording their own short films on their mobile phones. With the launch of the Samsung HDICON this is becoming an increasingly viable option. Following Samsung’s ongoing commitment to the development in cutting-edge technology and innovation, there has never been a better time to extend our support of the AFI Awards.”

The Samsung Mobile AFI Awards nominations were announced on Wednesday 28 October in Sydney. The industry awards ceremony is taking place on Friday 11 December in Melbourne, and the official Samsung Mobile AFI Awards Ceremony to be held Saturday, 12 December in Melbourne.
