Thursday, June 14th, 2012 - MoMA

Art enthusiasts, it is time to celebrate! The planes have landed and the long journey across the Nullarbor is complete.

The heart of New York culture has finally arrived and the Art Gallery of Western Australia (AGWA) is opening its doors to showcase the much anticipated Picasso to Warhol: Fourteen Modern Masters from New York’s prestigious Museum of Modern Art (MoMA).

An exclusive collaboration between AGWA and MoMA, Picasso to Warhol: Fourteen Modern Masters is the first in a series of six world-class exhibitions coming to Perth over the next three years and is on display at AGWA from 16 June to 3 December, 2012.

AGWA is the only venue in the Southern Hemisphere to host these extraordinary exhibitions and what an experience this first one will be - Picasso, Pollock, Matisse, Miró, Warhol and other masters with well over one hundred works - the calibre of art has captured people’s attention across the nation.

The Gallery is set to become a hub of activity featuring live entertainment, music, Literary Links tours and more. The Café has a new NYC-inspired menu, the Gallery Shop is stocking exclusive designer products from the renowned MoMA store and the Manhattan-inspired pop-up bar and lounge will offer visitors a complete experience.

Director of AGWA, Dr Stefano Carboni, said the MoMA experience at AGWA offers Australians an unparalleled insight into history’s most renowned artists coupled with the vibrancy of all things New York.

“After two years of planning we are so excited to see the pieces finally on the walls and delighted with the way the exhibition looks,” Stefano said.

“I am particularly honoured to be able to share this rare, once-in-a-lifetime experience with the Australian public and international visitors as we bring New York and MoMA to the heart of Perth.”

Picasso to Warhol features a dynamic selection of works created by celebrated artists Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Constantin Brancusi, Piet Mondrian, Fernand Léger, Marcel Duchamp, Giorgio De Chirico, Joan Miró, Romare Bearden, Alexander Calder, Jackson Pollock, Louise Bourgeois, Jasper Johns and Andy Warhol.

The exhibition will be officially opened by Premier Colin Barnett at an exclusive VIP launch event this evening. The celebrations will continue at the sold-out opening party on Friday 15 June.
