Saturday, October 31st, 2009 - HASSELL
VS1, home to SA Water’s headquarters on Victoria Square, has been recognised as a leading example of sustainable design in Australia at the National Architecture Awards held in Melbourne last night (October 29).

The project, by leading architecture, design and planning firm, HASSELL, received the National Award for Sustainable Architecture, adding to the accolade of becoming South Australia’s first building to achieve a 6 Green Star certified GBCA Design rating.

In addition, SA Water was last night awarded the highest honour as the winner of the Large Commercial category at the national BPN Sustainability Awards announced in Sydney, together with a High Commendation for the Interiors category.

The National Architecture Awards, hosted by the Australian Institute of Architects, are designed to recognise, celebrate and award outstanding achievements and excellence in architecture.

Mariano DeDuonni, Managing Principal of HASSELL, said the latest awards top off what has been a stellar year for the firm.

“Our projects have been recognised at the highest level which is a testament to our team, our clients and our project partners who have worked hard to achieve excellence in design,” Mariano said.

“We are truly proud of our work across all our disciplines from urban design, architecture, interiors and landscape.”

The A-grade SA Water building, designed from the inside out around a central atrium and stair, provides abundant natural light and views and connects SA Water’s tenancy across eight floors, creating a strong sense of community.

Project Architect David Homburg said HASSELL’s approach to sustainability and occupant wellbeing was to minimise the long-term environmental impact of resources, materials, construction and operation, whilst maximising indoor environment quality.

“SA Water showcases sustainability in design at every level and sets a benchmark for future developments throughout Australia,” David said.

“This project demonstrates that sustainability needn’t be an ‘optional extra’, but part of the design aim from the commencement of any project, regardless of size.”

SA Water was also recognised earlier in the year, taking out the top prize for Environmental Sustainable Design at the National Interior Design Awards.
