National Radio remains the most listened-to radio station in New Zealand, with the highest number of Kiwis having tuned in over the past year according to the latest Roy Morgan Research data.

The listeners of the National Radio and Newstalk ZB (the top two) stations are mainly males (53% and 54% respectively). However, the station that skews most to a male audience is The Rock with almost two-thirds (64%) of their listeners coming from this demographic.

These findings are based on an ongoing nationwide survey consisting of approximately 12,000 New Zealanders conducted by Roy Morgan Research in the 12 months to January 2012.

“The National Radio, which is the only non-commercial station, has managed to retain its dominance. However, some interesting trends emerged when we start to look at the demographic divide.

“The National Radio and Newstalk ZB listeners are likely to be males over the age of 50.  On the other hand, ZM, More FM, The Breeze and the Edge are more likely to be female, with nearly two-thirds of their listeners being female.

“The Edge has also managed to capture the attention of younger New Zealanders. Over one-quarter (27%) of Kiwis aged 14-24 listen to The Edge. This is by far the most popular station for this demographic.”
