Approximately 1.8 million New Zealanders 18+ bought a lottery/lotto ticket in the past 3 months, according to the latest Roy Morgan Research 2012 data.
 
The second most popular gambling activity in New Zealand is the instant Kiwi/scratch ticket. Almost one-third (29%) of women and  one-fifth (20%) of men have purchased a Kiwi/scratch ticket in an average three month period in the twelve months to January 2012. This was followed by playing a poker machine which has an even split between men and women (10% each).

These findings are based on an ongoing nationwide survey consisting of approximately 12,000 New Zealanders conducted by Roy Morgan Research in the 12 months to January 2012.


Pip Elliott, Head of Roy Morgan New Zealand, Roy Morgan Research says:
 
“Overall, there are more New Zealanders purchasing lottery/lotto ticket. This has increased from 52% to 56% over the past year.

“In terms of gender, women participate in two types of gambling activities more often than men – keno tickets and instant Kiwi/scratch tickets. Women are only one percentage point ahead in terms of keno ticket purchases. However, they are nine percentage points ahead in terms of instant Kiwi/scratch ticket purchases, which is the biggest difference in any of these gambling activities.

“Men on the other hand, are ahead of their female counterparts for all other gambling activities. In particular they are more than twice as likely to use a TAB and use the internet to place a bet. In this respect, men are leading the online gambling phenomenon.

“Of interest are the differing profiles of New Zealanders according to their gambling preferences.”
