WA is set to take on the rest of Australia, after making it to the Theatresports National Championships.
Presented by Sydney’s Impro Australia on May 19 at the Enmore Theatre, it’s known as the “AFL grand final” of improvised comedy and the jewel in the crown of the Sydney Comedy Festival.
After winning the championships in 2009 (the only non-NSW or Victorian team to do so), WA’s The Perthonalities are fired up and ready to bring the title home once more.
Boasting a sensational line-up of experienced improvisers, actors and comedians from Perth improvisation company, Just Improvise, the 2012 team is led by Shane Adamczak and features Brianna Williams and Michael Burke.
Multi-award winning comedian and improviser Shane Adamczak said: “To be selected to lead the 2012 team at the nationals is an honour.
“There are so many extremely talented improvisers in WA and it's a privilege to just to be part of that scene, so to represent WA and Just Improvise is exciting.
“It’s a high- pressured gig, but I know we'll do WA proud.”
Williams, an award-winning musical theatre performer and improviser added: "It's a thrill to be selected to represent Just Improvise and WA at the National Theatresports Champtionships.
"Perth has a great impro scene and it's awesome to be able to share that with other states."
Pitting the best improvisational comedy minds from around Australia head-to-head, Theatresports challenges performers to create instant comedy sketches based on surprise offers and audience suggestions.
With no scripts and no safety net, it’s all done impromptu and the inspiration for TV shows such as Whose Line Is It Anyway? and Thank God You’re Here.
The Theatresports National Championships have been running for more than25 years and have seen some of the country's funniest people grace its stage: Wil Anderson, The Axis of Awesome and even smarties like Andrew Denton and Andrew O’Keefe.
