With the Royal Commission in Victoria issuing its interim report and the bushfire season already underway in Queensland and New South Wales and soon Victoria, a timely new website has been launched.
Fire In Mind is an online community forum, an equipment store, a directory and an information website targeting Australians who live with the risk of bushfire. Fire In Mind has been established by Kate Lawrence, a former community lawyer who is a CFA trained community fireguard facilitator and Fire Ready presenter. Kate lives in the township of Macedon on the outskirts of Melbourne, a town destroyed by fire on Ash Wednesday in 1983.
“When I moved here five years ago I went to the library to borrow the book that would tell me the story of the fire that destroyed the town. I was totally surprised when there wasn’t anything,” Ms Lawrence said. “So one thing led to another and I got a job with the CFA doing community education about how to prepare for bushfires.
"People are really passionate about bushfires. We all have strongly held beliefs and feelings about fires in the past and also fires we are yet to face," Ms Lawrence stated. “So I don't think its enough for us to just receive information from government, we need to be able to share and learn from each other so we can understand fire and ourselves better, and make better decisions.
"The web site provides a place online for people, right across Australia, to discuss their ideas and questions about how they approach the risk of bushfires. My hope is that the website will help develop community ownership and therefore safer communities,” she explained.
“I also want to make it as easy as possible for people to buy the things they need all in one place” Ms Lawrence stated. “The online store is an educational tool - people can see the things that might be useful. Each item has an explanation of how and why it is used.”
